Objective and origin
Even before the establishment of the autonomous VUB, the initiative was taken to establish a Dutch-language department within the alumni association of the ULB. In 1956, Rem Reniers, together with the first chairman Willem Verougstraete, took over the reins and started the de facto association OSB. From the OSB, a significant contribution was made to the support of the Dutch-language courses at the ULB and later the autonomous VUB. Parallel to the establishment of the VUB, the OSB became its own legal entity in 1969.
This led to the growth of an open and active association that was also one of the founders of liberal association life in Brussels and Flanders.
The OSB aims to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among all former students and to contribute to the development and expansion of the VUB. The principle of Free Inquiry, which is also the foundation of the VUB, is our guideline.
To achieve this, the OSB offers a wide range of socio-cultural activities: excursions, lectures, training courses, reunions, networking events, etc.
